Dressing Beauty with Beauty -- Cintiq's Role in Textile Design
Elegant Indian Fabrics & 21st Century Design Technology
For decades, fashion designers and consumers have been fascinated by the beautiful patterns of India's fabrics. Today, these elegant designs are created and printed digitally! We visited the design team at Sahiba Fabrics, one of India's largest manufacturers, to see how modern technology, including Wacom's tablet technology, has revolutionized this century-old industry.
The textile designer is a specialist among specialists. He is an artist and designer, but he also needs to know about the processes, the material, the printing machines as well as types of clothing and fashion trends. With so much to do, the digital revolution has contributed tremendously to Sahiba's ability to turn ideas into finished products.
Need to Improve Production Efficiency
"Our production process starts
from weaving, then dyeing, printing, finishing and the addition of
embroidery to increase the value of the final product." The textile
industry today uses computers to print their beautiful patterns onto
the fabrics. Designers who create by hand usually draw or paint their
design onto paper, then scan their designs into the computer and edit
the photograph using various kinds of software. "In today's business
environment it is not possible to continue designing textiles without
computers. The design tools available on computers give us much finer
and quicker results. We
still design some patterns by hand but it much, much more time
consuming.”
This is where using Wacom's interactive pen displays and pen tablets first became useful. As all designers know, using the pen is much faster than using a mouse. In addition, because holding and tapping with a pen is more natural than holding a mouse and pressing the mouse buttons, designers are able to avoid repetitive stress injury. The pen is simply more comfortable to work with.
The Cintiq 21UX -- "...there's no going back"
The designers at Sahiba Fabrics have gone a step further. By using
Wacom's Cintiq Interactive Pen Display to design patterns directly into
the computer they have surpassed traditional design methods in terms of
quality and production time. "Using the Cintiq is much more
advantageous than the Intuos for the very simple reason that it is much
more user friendly. The touch screen makes working more flexible."
By working directly on the screen, the designers can simulate the workspace of traditional painting and sketching by hand. At the same time, they also have the powerful tools of programs like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, CorelDRAW and Painter IX, and Net CAD right next to them. "Our designers use the latest versions of Photoshop to create designs. The brushes especially give an amazing effect!"
"It takes about a week to get used to it, but once you start using Cintiq, there's no going back!" In fact, Sahiba is so happy with the work of their designers since switching to the Cintiq that they have placed orders for 10 more!!
Sahiba Fabrics is currently one of India’s largest manufactures of 100% polyester fabrics with a composite textile plant. They are currently expanding their activities to include a garment house venture.
