PMVX talks about creating the hit Thai film, King Naresuan

Situated in the serene outskirts of Bangkok, PMVX is not your run-of-mill movie studio. The two-story studio accommodates about 12 people comprised mainly of digital artists. By mid-2008, PMVX will expand into another building across the street. Both offices will house about 50 digital artists and 3D modelers working on full feature movies.
The successful growth of PMVX and its managing director, Yongkiat Karnchanapayap, comes on the heels of their work on the spell-binding epic King Naresuan the Movie (kingnaresuanmovie.com), a big budget production, and one of the most successful movies in Thailand in recent years, PMVX is a leader in the effects industry, well known for the attention to details and quality of production, and Yongkiat made use of the latest technologies to raise his studio's quality in this movie. Wacom’s pen tablet technology was the de-facto tool of choice in this achievement.
The multi-talented managing director is well versed in 3D animation, digital painting, web design, movie production applications and many other graphics applications. He is already planning to release a book on animation and design in 2008 and has successfully invited other well known artists in the world to contribute to this book.
Yongkiat's ideology in moviemaking is a serious one and creativity is emphasized throughout in his production team. Unlike other studios, Yongkiat plans only to make one full-feature film once every 3 years to ensure consistent quality in all his movies.
An ardent Wacom user for 10 years, Yongkiat started with a Graphire 2 and now works on the top-of-the-line Cintiq 21UX in his current role. In September 2007, Yongkiat acquired 12 Intuos3 units and 2 Cintiq 21UX units for PMVX to guarantee his studio has the most up-to-date equipment for animation, design and modeling. The number of Wacom Intuos3 and Cintiqs will gradually grow in line with the company expansion plan. In the production room, there are two Macintosh computers and 10 Quad Core PCs. Eventually another 60 new machines will be added to beef up the production capacity.
Yongkiat and his team chose Wacom products for the ease of use, productivity and quality over other input devices such as mouse.
Wacom products are used in important stages of production including concept sketching, map painting, 2D painting, 3D sculpting and compositing. The software used in conjunction with the Wacom products included Photoshop, ZBrush, Maya, Cinema 4D, ArtRage and AfterEffects. When used together with Wacom products, these software really come alive allowing Yongkiat and his team to fully utilize the features to create effects never before possible.
Wacom products used to draw and paint like natural brushes has allowed PMVX to create high quality, precision artwork. According to Yongkiat, they have helped to reduce production time by as much as an astounding 300% achieving a standard for productivity that was impossible in the past.
The PMVX team finds the pen pressure and tilt sensitivity to be important in their work. The strokes are like real pen or pencil strokes on paper. Cintiq 21UX is able to provide the WYSIWYG effect which aided in the creation of special effects.
Yongkiat finds that it's extremely difficult to work without the Wacom products. He has also observed that technology such as those offered by Wacom have helped budding young talent to produce movies with very low budgets, something that would have been impossible when he was starting out.
In his opinion, the industry has benefited from Wacom products in terms of cost savings from shorter production time and superior quality art. Other advantages of using Wacom products include speed, precision, versatility and compatibility with PC and Mac machines. The performance also enables PMVX team to work more fluently on sophisticated tasks and Wacom's constant innovations push the boundaries of their creativity.
Because Yongkiat wants to take his moviemaking passion to world-class levels, he's very selective about the tools he uses. He highly recommends Wacom products to other digital artists, art students and especially to art universities in Thailand. By using Wacom products in students' curriculum, he believes it can help bridge the gap between academic learning and commercial work requirement.
Who knows, you just might catch a PMVX-made movie at a theatre near you soon.
